Micmac Nikan'usk Associate

Wabanaki Public Health believes youth are essential partners in creating positive community change. The Nikan'usk (Youth Engagement) Associate role is to empower and prepare youth to use their voice and to make an impact on their communities, and to build the capacity of adults to support youth organizing and leadership. The Youth Engagement Associate will facilitate Project Venture, youth programs and support youth councils in the communities by engaging, supporting and empowering youth voice and youth leadership with the use of Wabanaki Culture and the Project Venture, MYAN, UNITY toolkits. The Nikan'usk (Youth Engagement Associate) will work with the communications team to develop and share substance use prevention focused content.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Implement Project Venture curriculum in schools
  • Coordinate and support Youth Councils (including relationship building with youth workers/directors, youth and their parents/guardians, curriculum design, program instruction/facilitation, logistics planning, recruitment and promotion, evaluation, and support to youth leaders and team staff assisting with the program)
  • Assist with the design and delivery of trainings to middle and high school youth and adult partners
  • Research and create resource materials around youth substance use prevention
  • Work as part of the WPH team to plan and implement youth gatherings such as the WPH Inter-Tribal Youth Gathering, and youth-led gatherings
  • Collaborate with communications team to develop content for social media, website, etc.
  • Maintain a fun and safe place for youth to develop a sense of pride, optimism, and belonging
  • Promote the development of social and emotional skills, youth empowerment and youth voice
  • Create an environment which frequently recognizes both the efforts and achievements of youth in meaningful public ways
  • Employ problem-solving skills when needed to redirect youths behaviors
  • Engage with all staff in a collaborative manner
  • Maintain communication with the supervisor with the use of email, call/text, google calendar, the Google team drive, and timesheets.
  • Attend/present at WPH community events (health fairs, community events, DCC meetings, etc)
  • Attend trainings and engage in professional development (CECs)
  • Complete required trainings to get the Provisional prevention specialist training
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and weekly check-ins
  • Ensure Project Venture and other youth programs attendance and program data are tracked, collected, and analyzed
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • University degree or college diploma in public health, health, education or a related field AND two years previous experience OR
  • 4 years of experience in public health, health, education, youth-serving profession, or a related field
  • Experience working with youth
  • Understanding of Social/Emotional Development
  • Open to new ways of thinking about youth programming and prevention
  • Event planning
  • A sense of humor
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills,
  • The ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as independently
  • A strong work ethic and¬†enthusiasm
  • Candidate must be willing to travel with some overnights for trainings, youth retreats, and events.
  • A good driving record and access to reliable transportation are required.
  • All candidates must pass a criminal background check
  • Experience working with Tribal communities
  • Experience working in a school setting
  • Experience doing adventure based activities- whitewater rafting, rock climbing, backpacking, snowshoeing, kayaking, mountain biking, etc.
  • Able to have a flexible work schedule; must be willing to work hours in the evening, weekends, and overnight
  • Able to lift and carry 50 pounds regularly
  • Able to see and respond to dangerous situations
  • Able to work outside in inclement weather
