23rd Annual Wabanaki Spring Social Postponed

Good Afternoon

With a heavy heart, we have decided to postpone the 2020 Annual Wabanaki Spring Social.  We have made this decision due to the significant risk of illness from the Coronavirus (COVID-19).  As of March 9, 2020, U.S. states have reported over 500 cases of COVID-19. The state of Massachusetts has declared a state of emergency, as their case number has doubled, and many colleges and universities have decided to restrict students’ return to school from Spring break. We know that widespread transmission of COVID-19 in the U.S. may occur, including within Maine.

There are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Maine at this time, however we know our neighboring states are experiencing active cases. Though we do not fully know the clinical spectrum of COVID-19, we know that people have experienced symptoms that range from mild to severe, with severe illness occurring in 15-20% of patients.

We know that we need to protect our communities from the community-spread of COVID-19. The most serious disease associated with COVID-19 includes elders and people with other health conditions, such as  heart disease, lung disease, and diabetes. There is NO vaccine to prevent COVID-19 at this time, nor are there FDA approved medications for the treatment of COVID-19.

The Wabanaki Spring Social is held annually to celebrate our culture and promote wellness. We will reschedule this event on May 30th and we will continue to monitor the progress of COVID-19.  We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Our intent is to minimize risk and harm and to keep our people, especially our most vulnerable, safe.

In the meantime, we encourage our community to please use precautions and prevent spread.  Your lives are precious.
