International Mother Language Day is observed around the world on Feb. 21. It has been held each year since 2000.
International Mother Language Day was first proclaimed by the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in November 1999, aimed at improving the preservation and protection of languages.
How will you mark Mother Language Day? Consider exploring community language resources, such as those found on the Passamaquoddy-Maliseet Language portal and the Wabanaki Maine Native Studies page at Maine.gov.
